We performed a quantitative comparison of brittle thrust wedge experiments to evaluate the variability among analogue models and to appraise the reproducibility and limits of model interpretation. Fifteen analogue modeling laboratories participated in this benchmark initiative. Each laboratory received a shipment of the same type of quartz and corundum sand and all laboratories adhered to a stringent model building protocol and used the same type of foil to cover base and sidewalls of the sandbox. Sieve structure, sifting height, filling rate, and details on off-scraping of excess sand followed prescribed procedures. Our analogue benchmark shows that even for simple plane-strain experiments with prescribed stringent model construction techniques,...

Dynamics of sand and mud mixtures: a multiprocess-based modelling strategy ArchiMer
Le Hir, Pierre; Cayocca, Florence; Waeles, Benoit.
Mixed sediments are constituted of cohesive and non-cohesive materials with distinct behaviours that numerical models traditionally manage separately. This paper first introduces a rapid state of the Art in sediment transport modelling in order to point out the specific requirements for process-based models applied to mixed sediments. Based on a preliminary study by Waeles et al. (2007), which showed the validity of the advection approach to compute fine sand transport, a complete modelling strategy is described: it is applied to the suspended transport of sand and mud mixtures, and accounts for consolidation of mixed sediments. Special care is paid to the realistic representation of the structure and density of sand and mud mixtures, and to the...

Dynamique sédimentaire et répartition granulométrique des sédiments de surface dans la frange littorale Ras Taguermess-Ras Marmour (golfe de Gabès) OceanDocs
Brahim., M.; Abdelfattah., A..

Effects of nickel fertilization on soybean growth in tropical soils Bragantia
Levy,Camila de Carvalho Braga; Mellis,Estêvão Vicari; Murrer,Marina Krey; Inglés,Carlos Repiso; Daynes,Cathal N.; Cavalli,Edilson; Chiba,Marcio Koiti.
ABSTRACT Although nickel (Ni) is recognized as plant nutrient since the turn of the 21st century, uncertainty remains about its optimum application rates and forms. This paper focuses on Ni application in soils, relating to its effect as a plant micronutrient. Specifically, the effect of Ni on the activity of urease in soybean plants is examined. The effects of applying four Ni rates in two different soil types were tested. A full factorial 2 × 4 blocked design experiment was established under controlled conditions. Ni rates (0, 0.25, 0.5 and1.0 mg of Ni·kg–1 of soil) were applied in two soils with contrasting clay contents. The addition of Ni increased the urease activity in soybean plants but was affected by soil textural differences. The highest urease...

Formulating Fine to Medium Sand Erosion for Suspended Sediment Transport Models ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois; Le Hir, Pierre.
The capacity of an advection/diffusion model to predict sand transport under varying wave and current conditions is evaluated. The horizontal sand transport rate is computed by vertical integration of the suspended sediment flux. A correction procedure for the near-bed concentration is proposed so that model results are independent of the vertical resolution. The method can thus be implemented in regional models with operational applications. Simulating equilibrium sand transport rates, when erosion and deposition are balanced, requires a new empirical erosion law that involves the non-dimensional excess shear stress and a parameter that depends on the size of the sand grain. Comparison with several datasets and sediment transport formulae demonstrated the...

Glass Microbeads in Analog Models of Thrust Wedges Anais da ABC (AABC)
D'ANGELO,TAYNARA; GOMES,CAROLINE J.S..
ABSTRACT Glass microbeads are frequently used in analog physical modeling to simulate weak detachment zones but have been neglected in models of thrust wedges. Microbeads differ from quartz sand in grain shape and in low angle of internal friction. In this study, we compared the structural characteristics of microbeads and sand wedges. To obtain a better picture of their mechanical behavior, we determined the physical and frictional properties of microbeads using polarizing and scanning electron microscopy and ring-shear tests, respectively. We built shortening experiments with different basal frictions and measured the thickness, slope and length of the wedges and also the fault spacings. All the microbeads experiments revealed wedge geometries that were...

Growth of lulo (Solanum quitoense Lam.) plants affected by salinity and substrate Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Flórez,Sandra Liliana; Lasprilla,Diego Miranda; Chaves,Bernardo; Fischer,Gerhard; Magnitskiy,Stsnislav.
The effects of 0, 30 and 60 mM NaCl and substrates (red peat, sand or 3:1:1 [w/w] mixture of peat, sand, or soil) on vegetative growth of lulo, an Andean fruit species, during 12 weeks were studied. The experiment was carried out by using 2000 cm³ of polypropylene plastic pots under greenhouse conditions. Plant height, number of leaves and nodes, leaf area, total plant dry matter (DM), and shoot/root ratio were evaluated. With the increase of salt concentration, the plant height, the number of leaves and nodes, the leaf areas and plant dry mass DM decreased, whereas shoot/root ratio increased. Sand grown lulo plants were most affected by salinity and presented total mortality at 60 mM NaCl. On the other hand, plants held either in peat or in substrate...

Modeling mud and sand transfers between a macrotidal estuary and the continental shelf: influence of the sediment-transport parameterization ArchiMer
Diaz, Melanie; Grasso, Florent; Le Hir, Pierre; Sottolichio, Aldo; Caillaud, Matthieu; Thouvenin, Benedicte.
Coastal environments are directly influenced by terrigenous inputs coming from rivers through estuaries. Quantifying the amount of nutrients and contaminants transported by sediments from continental areas to the sea is crucial for marine resources protection. However, the complexity of estuarine dynamics makes it difficult to quantify sediment fluxes from field measurements alone and requires numerical modeling. Thus, using a realistic 3D hydrodynamic and sediment transport model, this study aims at evaluating the influence of model empirical parameters on sediment fluxes and estimating uncertainties on mud and sand transfers at a macrotidal estuary mouth. A sensitivity analysis, considering changes in sediment transport parameters, revealed that the...

Modelling sand resuspension by waves over a rippled bed OMA
Trouw, K.; Williams, J.J.; Rose, C.P..
With a two-dimensional Kappa-Epsilon-model and equations to describe sediment entrainment, diffusion, convection and settling, wave-induced flow velocities and sediment concentration fields over rippled beds have been calculated. Results from the simulations are compared with time-averaged vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles, C-profiles, measured in a large wave flume using the autonomous multi-sensor instrument STABLE. The simulations make it possible to examine in detail the mechanisms of sediment entrainment, vortex formation and advection. The resulting animations of model output allow a quasi-3-D visualization of sediment resuspension processes and aid quantification of the resulting vertical suspended sediment...

Observed and predicted vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles and bedforms in oscillatory-only flow OMA
Williams, J.J.; Bell, P.S.; Thorne, P.D.; Trouw, K.; Hardcastle, P.J.; Humphrey, J.D..
Measurements of hydrodynamic conditions and vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles, C-profiles, have been obtained above rippled sandy beds in a large wave flume. Measured values of wave height and period, water depth and sediment properties are used in well-known formulae to predict sediment dynamics and bed shear stresses due to waves. These data are then used in an existing convective model and a new model to predict C-profiles. Measured C-profiles and C-profiles predicted by the new model are shown to agree well for a range of grain sizes and wave conditions. Grain-scale bed roughness, defined using data from the model, is found to vary with the wave mobility number. Values for the wave mixing coefficient derived using the new model are...
